Read the story of The Tower of Babel Read the material and feel free to come up with further suggestions to the activity described below (2).

In the story of The Tower of Babel, God gives each person their own language and effectively puts an end to the construction of the tower. The people of the story can't communicate with each other which means that they couldn't cooperate. It ends up tearing them apart.

Today you will try to communicate with each other, but you are not allowed to speak the same language. For the activity you'll be paired and must try to communicate with your partner, who'll have to guess what you're trying to communicate.
In the first round you'll have to guess an emotion, but you are only allowed to communicate by body language, meaning that talking or sounds are forbidden.
(Suggestions for emotions: happiness, anger, fear, to be uncomfortable, pain, dizziness, sadness, pride).
(Move on to the next round when you've both tried to guess an emotion. You can also choose the duration of each round, which'll make the participant able to find a quit place for the activity and come back for the conclusion).
For the second round you'll have to guess the subject your partner is talking about. The trick is that the person explaining can't use words that fit the subject. E.g. the subject is "school". Words like: teacher, board, chalk and student would not be permitted to say. Instead one would have to describe it: it's a place where most children visit every day. They usually sit down with others who are about the same age as themself. There's an adult present who'll tell them about different things.
(Suggestions for subjects: a lamp, a shoe, to run, a mother, a ship, a screwdriver, a match)
If you have paticipants who doesn't speak the same language, pair them. The exercise for them will then be to explain a subject (like round 2), but in their native tongue which the other has to guess. It can be a help to use transparent words and body language.

(Gather the participants and round off the activity)
What was the most difficult to communicate? Why was that more difficult than the other examples?
The moral of the story of The Tower of Babel is division: the people are torn apart from each other and the Tower is never finished.
Does that mean that we as humans aren't able to cooperate, if we don't understand what comes out of the other person's mouth? No. We communicate using more than words. We use arms and hands - and not only for sign language - but also when we hug or reach out a hand to say "hello".
Jesus taught us that we must be kind to everyone. So instead of building a tower to see the face of God, we are to let God use our hands to do good to others. When we do what God wants us to do, we're letting him use our hands.
The story of The Tower of Babel is about division because the people want to see God. Jesus taught us of cooperation and love - and that we see the face of God every day through the kind actions of hands from others.

Fadervor...

Dear God
Thank you for the people who will try to understand me, listen to me and will want to work together with me. Teach me to return the love, that I am thereby shown, so that we might together lay the bricks that'll make tomorrow better than yesterday and the day before that.
Our Father...

We've worked with communication based off of the story of The Tower of Babel. We've learned that we are able to understand each other altthrough it can be difficult when we don't speak the same language. This means that we can cooperate and create amazing things - like the Tower of Babel. What would you like to change in the world, if we by cooperation could achieve anything?
Take a closer look at the Pentecost/Whitsunday where the disiples recieve the ability to speak all languages in the world. Why would God grant them this opportunity when he deprived them of this in the story of The Tower of Babel?
